In a soft lavender hue, this scarf showcases intricate white patterns typical of Jamdani weaving.
Jamdani weave is a traditional technique of fabric weaving, primarily known from Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. It's a highly skilled form of handloom weaving that is recognized for its intricate patterns woven onto fine muslin.
The term "Jamdani" is of Persian origin, with "Jam" meaning flower and "Dani" meaning vase or container, indicative of the floral patterns that are commonly featured in these weaves.
Jamdani is distinguished by its labor-intensive process of adding supplementary weft threads in addition to the standard weft. This creates the ornate motifs that appear to float on the surface of the fabric, giving Jamdani its distinctive quality.
The technique was historically known as Dhakai, named after the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh, which was the hub for its production.
Due to the time and skill required to produce Jamdani, it is considered one of the most advanced hand weaving techniques in the world and has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
